Nancy's Biography
Nancy Hathaway has practiced and taught meditation for 33 plus years. She holds a Masters Degree in Education with a track in Counseling Psychology. In 1974 Nancy began her Buddhist studies in Kopan Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal. Since that time, she has studied extensively with Asian and Western teachers in the Zen, Theravada, and Tibetan traditions. For six years she was a resident in the Providence Zen Center, a Zen Buddhist Temple where she studied and trained in a monastic setting. She is a Senior Dharma Teacher in the international Kwan Um Zen School and was ordained as a Buddhist clergy and pastoral counselor in 1980 at the Providence Zen Center in Cumberland, RI. Nancy interned with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., in the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Clinic that he founded at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worchester, MA and worked with Kabat-Zinn using Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction in the Massachusetts prison system. In the Prevention & Recovery Program, a substance abuse clinic at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA, she taught Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction to the homeless and pre-release prisoners as well as working one on one in counseling sessions. She has also taught meditation and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction at The Mitre Corporation, the Westford Wellness Center, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, parent groups, public and private elementary and high schools, numerous colleges and universities including Harvard University's Work and Family Center, MIT, Holy Cross, Brandeis, University of Maine System, and a college level course through the Peace Studies Department of the University of Maine. Nancy is the mother of two successful, kind, compassionate, and happy sons who were born in the Zen Temple where she trained. In 1990 combining her love of meditation and mothering, she founded the program, "Being Present with Our Children ~ parenting mindfully" in Cambridge, MA. Through this program she offers workshops, retreats, classes, one on one sessions, and telephone appointments for parents who are interested in exploring mindfulness in everyday family life. Two anthologies for mothers have been published by Shambala Publications, Your Children Will Raise You, The Joys, Challenges, and Life Lessons of Motherhood, and Finding Your Inner Mama, edited by Eden Steinberg, in which Nancy has an essay titled, "I'm Breathing, Are You?" This same essay was selected for the anthology The Best Buddhist Writing 2006 published in October 2006 by Shambala. In 2005 she founded the Center for Studying Mindfulness - In Work, Family, Health, & Relationship. Being 8th generation Maine, Nancy is delighted to be back home in Maine living close to the Morgan Bay Zendo on the coast of the Blue Hill Peninsular.
